How we handle your information

Effective: May 14, 2026 · Last updated: May 14, 2026

dew Smart Homes (“dew,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a smart-home installation business operating in Los Angeles and Orange County, California, as a trade name of Shaka Electric. This policy explains what information we collect when you visit this site, contact us, or engage us for an install — how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

This policy applies to dew.homes and the systems we install in your home.

What we collect

When you fill out our contact form or email us, we receive:

  • Your name
  • Phone number and email address
  • Address or zip code (so we know your service area)
  • Project details you choose to share (type, budget range, timeline, notes)
  • How you heard about us (optional)

We do not buy data from third parties. We do not run advertising trackers on this site beyond standard server logs.

Cookies + site analytics

This website uses a minimal set of cookies and similar technologies:

  • Strictly necessary — session cookies that keep the site functioning (form state, security tokens). These cannot be disabled and are not used for tracking.
  • Vercel Analytics — first-party page-view counts. No third-party trackers, no cross-site identifiers, no advertising profiles. You can opt out via your browser's Do Not Track / Global Privacy Control signals (see below).

We do not use Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or any cross-site advertising trackers on this site. If that changes, we'll update this policy and tell existing customers.

How we use it

  • Respond to your inquiry within 24 hours
  • Schedule a free design consultation
  • Prepare a transparent quote for your project
  • Follow up on active proposals
  • Send service updates (install reminders, support messages) if you become a customer
  • Improve our website, services, and operations based on aggregate patterns (not individual profiling)

Marketing vs. transactional communications

We separate transactional messages (install confirmations, support replies, project updates, billing) from marketing messages (newsletters, promotions, referral requests).

You can opt out of marketing messages at any time without losing access to transactional communication required to serve you as a customer.

  • Email marketing: every marketing email has a one-click unsubscribe link in the footer.
  • SMS marketing: reply STOP to any marketing text.
  • You will continue to receive transactional messages tied to active work (a scheduled install, an open quote, a support thread you started).

Who sees your information

Inside dew: the founders and the dew install team working on your project.

Outside dew, we share limited information with a small set of service providers who help us run the business:

  • Resend — sends our email notifications and replies
  • Quo (formerly OpenPhone) — handles our business phone calls and text messages
  • Notion — stores our lead pipeline (CRM)
  • Vercel — hosts this website and the contact form
  • Google Workspace — runs our business email (grant@dew.homes, ryan@dew.homes, soren@dew.homes)
  • Stripe — processes payments once you become a customer
  • Mercury — handles our business banking (no customer-side exposure)

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or for any third party's marketing purposes. We only share with the providers above, only the data they need to do their job, and only under written terms that require them to protect it.

SMS opt-in information is never shared with anyone, ever — including affiliates. This is a category we treat as off-limits regardless of business reason.

SMS and call communications

If you contact us by email, the message may be saved for our internal records so we can serve you better and follow up accurately.

SMS program description: dew Smart Homes sends customer-care, consultation-scheduling, install-coordination, and (with explicit consent) promotional messages. Message frequency varies by project stage and your preferences — typically 1–4 messages per week during active engagement. Standard message and data rates may apply.

How you opt in: by texting us first, by checking the SMS consent box on our contact form, or by signing a written install agreement that includes SMS as the project communication channel.

To stop: reply STOP at any time to opt out of SMS. Reply HELP for help. Opt-out is processed within one business day.

No third-party sharing: your SMS opt-in, phone number, and message content are not shared with third parties for their marketing purposes. We do not sell or rent phone numbers. The only third party that handles your SMS data is our carrier (Quo) and any underlying network operators required to deliver the message.

Voice command and AI processing

The dew install includes voice control (currently Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition with Atom Echo room devices). Voice processing runs on hardware in your home by default — your audio is not routed to dew servers or any third-party cloud unless you explicitly opt in.

If you choose to enable cloud-based voice (for example, using a third-party model for more capable responses), we will tell you exactly which model, which provider, and what audio is being sent. You can revoke that consent at any time and voice processing returns to local-only.

We do not use your voice commands, transcripts, or home audio to train any AI model. We do not retain voice audio centrally — anything kept for debugging stays on your local system and is purged on a rolling 7-day window unless you ask us to keep specific samples for a support case.

Smart home install data

If you become a dew customer, the systems we install (cameras, sensors, controllers, locks, lights) generate data about how your home is used. Our default architecture keeps this data on devices in your home — camera footage, sensor history, voice commands, lock activity — and does not route it through dew servers.

Where remote access is needed (a remote support plan, support troubleshooting, your own off-site backup), we ask for explicit consent before any data leaves your house. The consent specifies what data, for what purpose, and for how long. You can revoke consent at any time and remote access ends within one business day.

Camera footage and sensor data are encrypted in transit and at rest where the underlying hardware supports it. We never view your camera streams or sensor activity without an active support request from you, except in the limited case of automated system-health monitoring (uptime checks that look at whether devices are online, not what they're recording).

Sensitive personal information

Under California law, certain categories are treated as “sensitive personal information” — including precise geolocation, contents of mail/email/text messages, and audio/visual data of you in private spaces.

The only sensitive personal information we collect or process is:

  • Your home address (precise geolocation, used solely to dispatch installs and confirm service-area eligibility)
  • Audio/visual data from systems installed in your home (handled per the “Smart home install data” and “Voice command” sections above — stored locally on your hardware, not on dew servers, unless you opt in to remote access)
  • SMS and call content with dew (handled per the “SMS and call communications” section)

We use sensitive personal information only for the purpose you provided it — never for inferring characteristics about you, never for advertising, never for sale.

Automated decision-making and profiling

We do not make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. We do not profile customers for advertising, credit, insurance, employment, housing, education, or any other consequential decision. Quotes and scopes are designed by people, not by an algorithm.

How long we keep it

  • Active lead/customer data: as long as you're an active prospect or customer, plus up to 3 years after the relationship ends, for tax and record-keeping
  • SMS and call history: 12 months by default, extended only as needed for active work or legal hold
  • Install configuration data (the technical specs of your install): retained for as long as you're a customer plus 12 months, to support warranty work
  • Camera and sensor data: lives on your hardware on your retention schedule — not retained centrally by dew
  • Website analytics (aggregate): 25 months per Vercel's default retention
  • Tax records: 7 years per IRS and California Franchise Tax Board requirements

When retention periods end and there's no active business reason or legal obligation to keep something, we delete it.

Children's privacy

This site and our services are not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with information, contact us at grant@dew.homes and we will delete it.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

We honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal sent by your browser. When we detect a GPC signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information — though, again, we do not sell your information, so the practical effect is to suppress non-essential analytics for your session.

Data breach notification

If we discover a confirmed breach of dew systems or any subprocessor that compromises your personal information, we will notify you without unreasonable delay — within 72 hours of confirmation where the information involved would trigger California breach notification requirements (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.82). The notice will describe what happened, what data was involved, what we've done, and what you can do.

Your rights (California / CCPA + CPRA)

Because we operate in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), applies. You have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we've collected about you, the categories of sources, the purposes of collection, and the categories of third parties we share with
  • Access — request a copy of that information in a portable format
  • Correct inaccurate personal information we hold about you
  • Delete your information, subject to legitimate business need and legal retention obligations
  • Opt out of sale or sharing — though we do not sell or share your information for cross-context behavioral advertising
  • Limit the use of sensitive personal information to what's strictly necessary to provide the service you asked for
  • Non-discrimination — exercising any right above will not result in worse service, higher prices, or any other penalty
  • Authorized agent — you can designate someone else to exercise these rights on your behalf with proper documentation

To exercise any of these rights, email grant@dew.homes with the request. We will verify your identity (typically by confirming you control the email or phone associated with our records) and respond within 45 days, with one 45-day extension if reasonably necessary. There is no fee for requests unless they are clearly excessive, in which case we'll explain why before charging anything.

Security

We protect the information you share with us using:

  • TLS encryption for all data in transit between your browser, our site, and our subprocessors
  • Encryption at rest where supported by the subprocessor (all of our current providers offer this)
  • Two-factor authentication on every dew account that touches customer data
  • Least-privilege access — dew team members only see what they need to do their job
  • Regular review of subprocessor security postures and incident histories

No system is perfect, and we won't pretend ours is — but we take this seriously and limit exposure aggressively.

International users

dew operates in California and serves customers in California. Our website is hosted on infrastructure in the United States. If you visit this site from outside the United States, you understand that your information will be transferred to and processed in the U.S., where data protection laws may differ from your home country. We do not actively market to or solicit customers outside California; if you contact us from outside the U.S. anyway, we will handle your information consistent with this policy.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this page when our practices change. The “effective” date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will also be communicated to existing customers by email at least 30 days before they take effect.
